Sermons from Good News: Trust God

Church 8/26/2023

Offertory scripture:

Psalm 91:1-2

God has a plan for you, and in that plan there is a calling and a gifting.

Sermon message:

God is good.

Thesis: Trust God.

Proverbs 3:5

Proverbs 29:25 don’t put your trust in man; put your trust in God.

Isaiah 26:3

Psalm 56:3

Psalm 118:8-9 it is better to trust God than people, or even human leaders.

Consider King Hezekiah.

He was king during the time Israel was divided into two kingdoms: Israel and Judah.

Hezekiah’s father was a terrible man and a terrible king. He kicked God out of Judah.

When Hezekiah became king he undid the terrible things that his father did as king. He destroyed all the pagan stuff his dad did and returned Israel to worshiping God as the true God of the kingdom of Judah.

Point #1: When you put God first, He will bless you.

2 chronicles 31:21

Hezekiah put God first.

Matthew 6:33

Here is Hezekiah, doing things for God. But then…

The Syrian army comes and invades Judah. They’re going to come destroy Jerusalem. But Hezekiah turned to God…

2 chronicles 32:8

Hezekiah believed God.

2 chronicles 32:10-15 the king of Assyria mocking Hezekiah and his faith in God.

Similarly the above passage is what Satan whispers to God’s people to discourage them or dissuade them.

2 chronicles 32:16 sometimes other leaders will mock the God of the Bible, and His believers as well.

2 chronicles 32:17-19 the king of Assyria also sent letters mocking God.

Our God is not a pagan god nor a figment of a person’s imagination. He is real and able to save us and rescue us.

2 chronicles 32:20

Hezekiah and Isaiah prayed to God and cried out to Him.

2 chronicles 32:21 God delivered. And the king of Assyrian king met his fate.

Point #2: Trust God; you’re not alone.

The examples of king Hezekiah, king David, and countless other believers—they’re with you; they’ve been there.

Point #3: Trust God; he will not be mocked.

He may tolerate it for a while. But not forever.

Galatians 6:7

Trust God; He will handle your situation.

Point #4: Trust God. It’s not over.

The enemy may say it’s over. But it’s not over. Trust God. It’s not over.

Philippians 4:8

Point #1: God cares about you.

1 Peter 5:7

Point #2: God wants you blessed.

John 10:10

Reminder: Jesus cannot lie. So this shows that God wants you blessed.

Point #3: God changed your citizenship.

We were born into the kingdom of darkness. But if we have received Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, God made us citizens of heaven.

Colossians 1:13

Colossians 1:14

You’ve been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb Jesus, and you’ve been changed.

Point #4: God has given you victory.

Romans 8:31

Romans 8:37 we are more than conquerors through Jesus that loves us.

Point #5: God gave you His Word.

Without His Word, we don’t know any of the other things that are true.

2 Timothy 3:15

2 Timothy 3:16 all scripture is given by God.

Romans 10:17 faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Why is faith important? Because Mark 9:23: All things are possible to those who believe.

We need the Lord

Winslow: Is this the most corrupt period in American history, Carmen?
Carmen: It just might be, Winslow.
Winslow: What should we do?
Carmen: For starters, we could make America honest again!
Winslow: And Plan B?
Carmen: I think we're doing it...

I saw a comic strip online a few days ago from the comic, Prickly City, with the above dialogue. It prompted me to write a blog post, because it conveyed a message that spoke urgently to my spirit. Scott Stantis, its creator, is sort of a political cartoonist at heart, which is reflected in his strip. His two primary characters are Carmen, a liberterian (and a human), and Winslow, a Democratic voter (and a coyote). They somehow live in the desert Southwest of the United States. Stantis attempts to play these characters off each other in a humorous jab at how the two major sides of both politicians and voters in the U.S. spar with each other over politics.

Although the strip has been around for almost 20 years, it seems that only recently has it taken a more depressing turn, focusing on deeper fundamental topics (both on a values level as well as on a basic human understanding level) that not even just a few years ago, we would not have thought we would ever have had to face.

Even before I became a conservative, I knew America was slipping, and had been for a while. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I knew that something was wrong. It was as if I could sense a large difference between the events that were current even 20 years ago, as well as how our country was responding to them, compared with events from, say, the Civil War era. Or the World War II era. Yes, there was sin and there were atrocities both then and now, but how people responded and carried themselves were far different from how people were starting to respond even 20 years ago, let alone now in 2023.

Although I fully recognize that this is a comic strip meant to provide comic relief and not necessarily solutions to problems, one thing I disagree with Stantis is, along with other folks I've read, is that I believe we are now at a point where to fix our country requires looking beyond ourselves. For generations we believed that our country would right itself because it always had. Even now with 2023's current events, there are many people (including Christians) who still believe this idea that America can be fixed strictly by using original American ideals to fix itself.

I disagree because when I read the Bible about God's chosen nation, Israel, over the generations, especially in the period between King Solomon's reign and King Zedekiah's reign, the only time Israel ever got better was when the king in charge stripped all the altars, offerings, and customs of the false idols and false gods to whom these things were honoring, in favor of restoring the temples, altars, and customs designed to honor the true God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (and Moses, Samuel, and David among others). During those times Israel (and Judah) had peace, and even when unrest threatened to happen, or when other nations threatened to invade, because they were following the One true God, He protected them. It was only when Israel (and Judah) strayed from God and started praising and worshipping other gods, that they lost their protection and favor.

Ever nation that has ever existed, even nations who at one point were havens for Christians and had an abundance of good churches, have had rises and falls in terms of their power, favor, influence, etc.

As far as I'm concerned, America needs to take lessons from Israel and turn back, because it is now too late for us to rely solely on American-only ideals and American-only values to get us right. It is now too late to "trust in the American people" to get us back on track, because, well, as the last few years have shown, a lot of our people are deceived, too.

We need the Lord.

if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14, NKJV

Sermons from Good News: What is happening in this world

Church 8/19/2023

Offertory scripture:

Proverbs 3:9-10

Psalm 112:1-3

Blessed to be a blessing.

Sermon message:

Receive from God.

Thesis: What is happening in this world

God is not happy with people calling evil good and good evil.

This is serious.

Romans 8:37

Daniel 10:1-13

Point #1: There is a double kingdom system.

There is a seen kingdom (verse 1) and an unseen kingdom. (Verse 13)

Luke 4:5-7 (seen world)

The devil is not in the seen world but he influences the seen world.

Satan is a liar.

If Satan has power over a land, as he claims, where did he get it?

Adam’s original sin.

Genesis 1:26 God initially meant for humans to have dominion over the earth including all plants and animals.

But then Adam sinned. Genesis 3. He committed high treason and gave over human’s dominion over the earth, over to Satan.

2 Corinthians 4:4 the Bible says Satan who is the god of this world, have blinded the minds of those who doesn’t believe.

John 12:33. Refers to Satan as the ruler of this world.

Ephesians 2:2. Refers to the devil as the commander of the powers of the unseen world, and is at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.

Point #2: Satan cannot rule over (informed, knowledgeable) believers.

John 17:16 Jesus says: “believers do not belong to this world any more than I do.”

Colossians 1:12-13

1 John 5:19. We are the children of God and the world is under the control of the evil one.

Point #3: Believers have power over Satan.

This is good news.

1 John 4:4. You belong to God. You already have victory over people under the influence of the devil, because the Holy Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Isaiah 54:17 no weapon forged (or formed) against you will prosper……

Ephesians 6:12 we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities….

Ephesians 6:13 take on the whole armor of God……

You can do this! But put on God’s armor first.

1 Corinthians 15:57

Mark 16:17 Jesus: if you believe, in My Name you will cast out devils.

Daniel didn’t see answers right away. Don’t get discouraged. Don’t give up. Break the power of evil in Jesus’ name.

Point #4: Satan influences nonbelievers.

2 Corinthians 4:4

2 Timothy 2:26

Point #5: Unbelievers need us.

1 Timothy 2:1 onward

Understanding more about the Holy Spirit, part 2: Romans 8:11

Today's post is as a sort-of supplement to my post from Monday. When I was writing the previous post, this verse below was a key inspiration - and I completely forgot about it!

To put the verse in smaller print since the images are huge: (bold emphasis is mine)

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11

Lessons learning-in-progress: understanding more about the Holy Spirit

At this point, because my pattern of streaky blogging is well-established, I won't waste keystrokes or mental energy on trying to explain it. At this stage, when it comes to this part of my life, I perpetually live in this stage of having plenty of material ready to go, or almost ready to go, or half-baked, or still in the concept stage; and not always having the opportunity to post it. I think it's good that, unlike in my younger-adult years, I'm not constantly posting. Not unlike Apostle Paul, I realize I yearn to get the word out about Jesus' saving power, and occasionally talking about something unrelated to church or scripture, but sharing it more and more from a Biblical perspective. The longer I walk on this earth, the deeper it sinks in this urgent importance of looking at everything from this Biblical perspective, whether I'm talking about the evils of "pride" month, or about what I notice in the game of basketball and the elite professional sports league titled the National Basketball Association. Or other things.

Lately, I haven't been writing on here because 1.) I've been wedding planning, and 2.) God has been leading me through some other things. Since March, when I received conviction by the Holy Spirit to repent and return to God as I had been drifting far from Him for quite a while at that point, results from my returning back to Him have included victories over some internal spiritual issues that I had let fester. After a couple months or so of establishing a new, daily pattern of prayer and time spent reading God's Word (and in fact, establishing a pattern of doing this multiple times per day), I felt God begin to give me new insights regarding things in my life, some of which I have shared on here.

July was marked by reflecting on grief (a devotional on my Bible app that I've been alternately slogging through and avoiding) and by reflecting on persons that I believe God has highlighted that I needed to reach out to, both to apologize and if not explicitly extend forgiveness, at least show that I no longer have any hard feelings. This part has been bumpy. I reached out to three people, two of whom have received me well, and the third who still has yet to respond at all. With the first two people, I can confidently say that I at least did my part by apologizing and showing them that I no longer have hard feelings towards them, and by putting the rest in God's hands, I am beginning to be rewarded for it. I chose to take a different approach with the third person, considering that the end of our connection, while abrupt, was far better than the other two, in terms of communication and feelings expressed. But I may change that, depending on how God prompts me.

Now, I'm alternately slogging through and/or avoiding an even more difficult piece of personal growth before me. Because it is still too early, I will not reveal what the topic is, but I will say that this is going to be critical for establishing my future, particularly (I think) my near-future over the next several years. I think a part of my resistance here, just like with the above, is a sentiment I share with many people, whether or not they express it outwardly: why should I change if no one else is going to? ðŸ˜¡ It is a common human sentiment (I believe) for a person to have a long list of wrongs that others have done to them, while ignoring or minimizing the list of the wrongs they have committed against others, often by creating self-justifications such as: well, if this hadn't happened, I wouldn't have done that. ðŸ˜  Or: if he hadn't done this to me, I wouldn't have responded that way. ðŸ˜

Every human in existence has been guilty of this at some point or another in their lives (I'm definitely in this category), and I would dare say, most humans have been guilty of never moving on from this attitude (I pray that I don't fall into this category, ever).

Thing is, God doesn't care about our self-justifications. As I've continued to learn, there is no argument that I can pose that is contrary to the Truth of the Bible, and win. After all:

Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. Ecclesiastes 5:2, NIV

Not only that, but also this:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1, NIV

If God, who created the heavens and the earth, is Himself in heaven (which is higher than the earth), and we are on earth, then we have no business complaining about anything, ever. I say this knowing full well that I am still guilty of this on a daily basis, even this far into my walk with God, my adulthood, and my life.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, Philippians 2:14, NIV

In fact, what has been fueling this work of lessons learned and lessons I'm still learning (especially since March of this year), is the fact that I am in far from an ideal living situation, in multiple senses of the word. I cannot really expound more, as I know at least one of my fellow housemates, if not two, have read this blog in the past. They may still be reading this page; they may not. For confidentiality's sake, and for the sake of what I mentioned in Paragraph #4 of this post about the critical importance of my continued spiritual and emotional growth as it pertains to my future, I will have to keep the details private. Suffice to say, irritations from this part of my life have been what God has been using to... my Flesh wants to say "force me" to grow, but that sounds like complaining. A better reframing of this would be, from the Spirit: "propel me" to grow even further, even in ways that I still don't understand.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. Philippians 2:14-16a, NIV

In fact, over the last couple years, it seems like the entirety of Paul's letter to the Philippians has been challenging. Here are a few excerpts that, in addition to the above verse, are particularly challenging:

1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!  Philippians 2:1-8, NIV

Truth be told, it seems like the above teaching appears to go against key aspects of things I learned in therapy that I truly needed if I was going to grow up: 1.) stand up for myself, even if it means ticking off the other person; 2.) a promise of "doing my work" was that I would be able to go after the things in my adult life that I wanted to, taking the growth lessons learned from the counselors and other group members. However, even in spite of the fact that I grew within the structure of a Christian therapy center, there are lessons that I've come across since I graduated that I never anticipated that I would have to learn, nor things that I anticipated I would ever have to deal with (or, deal with again).

But in the same letter, Paul reveals some of God's promises to us if we humble ourselves daily, evidenced by how He rewarded His Son Jesus' complete and full obedience, including humbling Himself to that of a servant:

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11, NIV

Below is another verse that I've struggled with, due to how it can get twisted (and has) by other believers:

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13, NKJV

I think primarily my issue with this is that other believers I've encountered have tended to expand this truth (yes, it is truth) to apply it to others in an attempt to force them to meet whatever expectations they might have, and "no excuses" (my current living situation with the dynamics the way they currently are, for example). How I believe God has been helping me with this (a still-incomplete process):

But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31, NKJV

So, another of God's promises. Don't worry about trying to force it on your own strength. He Himself will provide the strength. It requires waiting on God (another challenge of mine), but at least it disarms the false claim that I might have to do something superhuman (or to find a way somehow to be superhuman) in order to meet someone else's expectations, to do it their way, and to do it right now!!!

The truth is, and it's a praiseworthy thing: over time, God has been answering my big question of: what are His promises for me? My frustration for a long time was that I wasn't getting any answers, because I was looking for material responses to a question that is in fact spiritual in nature. At some point along the way, I realized that, to get my answer, as part of figuring out how to cope with aspects of my current situation, I was going to have to pay attention to things as I read the Bible and prayed. As such, in addition to Isaiah 40:31, here are a few other verses (this is far from an exhaustive list!):

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19, NKJV

The above is another encouraging answer to the frustration that wrong interpretations of Philippians 4:13 had brought me. Below, however, is an even more profound answer that (I believe) God revealed me more recently:

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17, NKJV

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17, NIV

I included both translations because each one uses a different word to describe what Jesus promised His disciples back when He was here on earth in human flesh, as well as what He promises to His disciples on the earth today. One translation refers to this as the "Helper", the other, as the "Advocate." Either way, Jesus is referring to the Holy Spirit.

This will be my final point for today's post, as I could go on and on, and often do. I'm still learning this lesson, along with all the others mentioned above. Going back to Philippians 4:13, where we can indeed do all things (and my understanding includes, to suffer all things, to endure all things), because Jesus gives us strength; Jesus Himself promises to us an indwelling of God the Third Person, the Holy Spirit. This alone has been revealing to me how little I've understood about the Holy Spirit. To be fair, I have understood the basics for a while: the Holy Spirit is God, the Holy Spirit is a person (yes He is), and the Holy Spirit has unlimited power to heal, to bring life, to do all things in accordance with God's will. Just as sin and calling on demons can lead to demonic oppression and even possession in certain situations; calling on Jesus, renouncing sin and evil, and doing things from the heart that please God (by doing His will as outlined in the Bible), these things brings an indwelling of the Holy Spirit where He can propel us to endure, to live, to love, to anything that God asks us to do, or anything that He promises for us and prepares for us.

Holy Spirit indwelling is not, however, like possession in the same way as demonic possession. Because the Holy Spirit is God, He gives us free will to make our own decisions, unlike demons who possess a person. A person that is demonically possessed do not have free will; they are bound and completely subject to the whims of the devil. But a person who has received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior has the Holy Spirit, who counsels, comforts, helps, guides, encourages, heals, and more... but does not control.

The other thing I'm currently working to reconcile in my mind is this whole thing of "I can do it," even if whatever "it" is is completely foreign to me, or if I've never been taught. One of my remaining lifelong frustrations is this idea that I'm expected to know or be able to do something, even if I have never heard of it before or been taught before. After all, "what I don't know, I just flat-out don't know!" But: one of the things that is just beginning to click - and I know the enemy will not want me to grab hold of this truth, so I must therefore pray (and I invite you, the reader, to pray along in agreement with me on this) - is that, because the Holy Spirit is God, and because, having received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior, I have Him in me, He can therefore teach me anything. No matter how stressed, or anguished, or fearful, or sad, or [insert any other emotion that might apply], the Holy Spirit can show me how to do it, or where to go.

‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ Jeremiah 3:33, NKJV

The Holy Spirit has unlimited knowledge, and knows things that neither you nor I would know or understand without His revelation.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1, NKJV

But faith is required for this to work. Receiving Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior requires you to believe that He is who the Bible says he is, that God is who the Bible says He is, that the condition of this world and the condition of humanity, and the penalty for going along with the world and along with the majority humanity, is exactly as the Bible describes it to be. And as such, receiving Jesus into your heart in the above manner described, requires you to also believe that His blood sacrifice on the cross paid the price for the aforementioned penalty and paved the way for you to enter into heaven and into God's presence upon the death of your body. In this season, I'm learning that I therefore must not discount the reward of receiving the indwelling of the Holy Spirit into my body, which the Bible describes as a temple. I have been guilty of discounting this gift, and I must repent. Therefore, I do repent and give God all the thanks and praise for it.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6, NKJV

Sermons from Good News: God's Word is anointed

Note: our regular pastor was out of town, so our secondary pastor gave the message. Structurally, this reads more as a Bible study rather than a sermon, but included are some passages with which I'm less familiar, so it was a blessing to study the Scriptural passages along with the preacher and learn something new, even if it buffered some things I already knew.

Church 8/5/2023

Offertory scripture:

1 Peter 5:6-7

1 Peter 5:9

Sermon message:

God’s word is anointed.

Expect to hear something from God in His Word that will minister to you tonight.

Ephesians 1:16 I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers.

Think about that! That same power is available to us!

Ephesians 1:21: EVERYTHING that is named. No matter what your difficulty. No matter what your trial. No matter what your Goliath.

Ephesians 1:22: He is the head, we are the body. He has put everything beneath his feet, which men’s beneath us.

Ephesians 1:23

V13 but now in Christ Jesus you who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ

Colossians 1:18 He is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the first born from the dead, that in all things He might have the preeminence

2 Corinthians 5:17 therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation; old things are passed away, behold, all things are become.

2 Corinthians 5:18. All things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation (aka the Great Commission)

Matthew 28:18. Jesus came and spoke to his disciples: “all power is given unto Me….”

Matthew 28:20. “….Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. Remember, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”

Acts 3:1-6 Peter encountered a lame man outside the temple in Jerusalem. Peter used the authority of Jesus’s name to command the lame man to rise up and walk.

Acts 3:7-8 the lame man was healed and started walking and praising God.

Acts 3:12

Acts 3:16 and His name, through faith in His name has made this man strong. Peter explaining to the people who were astonished at the miracle.

Acts 4:8-10 Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and explains that it was by Jesus’s name that this man was healed.

Luke 10:17. The seventy disciples returned to Jesus with joy because they realized even the devils are subject to Jesus’s name.

Luke 10:18 Jesus replied: I saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

Luke 10:19. Continuing, Jesus says: “listen, I give to you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Stand on this: Jesus’s promise that nothing by any means shall hurt you.

My addition: Psalm 91:7: A thousand may fall by your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.

The authority of Jesus can stop any power that may threaten against Him.

Colossians 2:15 Jesus triumphs over all demonic powers and principalities.

Demonic powers have no dominion over you. They only can try to deceive you or to deceive others around you. We have authority over all demonic powers through Jesus’s name.

The Word of God has to be predominant in our hearts. Always go back to His Word.

Our faith and our mouth, speaking in faith, can defeat fear, anxiety, depression, etc.

If we sin: refer to 1 John 1:9: confess, because God is faithful to forgive us be cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Sermons from Good News: Get back to the race

Church 7/29/2023

Offertory scripture:

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust God in the good times and bad (or in need).

Proverbs 3:9-10

Honor God; He will bless you back.

Sermon message:

Thesis: Get back to the race.

Sometimes Christians or other church-goers can get sidetracked. Especially in a time of busy-ness.

We can get sidetracked because of:
Disappointments
Rejection
Broken relationships
Our own sin
Offenses/hypocrisy of others

Jesus wants you back on track and back in the race. Not just for Him, but it’s also for you.

If you get sidetracked you’ll miss some of God’s blessings, as well as others, they will suffer too

Consider apostle Peter. He messed up. He saw Jesus and did life with Him. But he got off track. But then he got back on track. It was good for him. It was good for others. And it is good for us.

Consider Paul and what the Holy Spirit had him say:

Hebrews 10:38 if any draw back, God will not delight in them. It’s not pleasurable.

Get back in the race. God doesn’t take pleasure in you not getting blessed or not being able to bless others.

Others need you back in the race.

How to get back in the race:

Point #1: Decide to take charge of your life.

Don’t let circumstances affect you or get you off track. Take charge of what God has entrusted you with. Everything begins with a decision.

James 4:7 submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Other things might try to compete for your attention. Put God first and what He wants you to do. Do what James 4:7 says.

(Reminder: James 1:22-24)

Jesus had this happen to Him. The devil tried to tempt Him, but He resisted and used scripture to fight back. Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Point #2: Decide to have an attitude of thanksgiving.

Unfortunately it is easy to complain. A complaining attitude is a powerful negative force. However, an attitude thanksgiving is a powerful positive force.

If a negative person can change their attitude (because they can) then it will improve their mental health, emotional health, physical health, and spiritual health.

It will help others around them as well.

If you hang around positive people, it will help you and your health as well.

This will help get you back on track.

Psalm 103:1-5

Point #3: Decide to commit to godly behavior in your life.

Serve God. Be thankful. Live in such a way that is holy and pleasing to God.

Serve, and worship.

Be a giver.

Giving is God’s character.

Romans 8:32

Giving has two sides. Giving will affect your heart, and your heart will affect your giving.

Matthew 6:19-21

When you give to the church, for example, God notices. And He will bless you back and bless you abundantly.

2 Corinthians 9:7

Galatians 6:7-8

When you give, you will change your heart, and you will reap.

Galatians 6:9-10

Don’t lose heart. Do good to all but especially to other believers.

2 Corinthians 9:6-9

God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:10 God gives you food and He gives you seed to be sown. And He increases the fruits of your righteousness.

Decide to commit to godly behavior, and give to the kingdom.

Point #4: Decide to focus on Jesus. No matter what politics are going on. Preach the word in season and out of season, and that word is Jesus.

Hebrews 12:1. How did Paul stay true to the word and finish the race? Look at Heb 12:1. Look forward to the future , not the past and your mistakes. It is never too late. Look forward to Jesus and His promises.

Hebrews 12:2 decide to focus on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Keep your eyes on Him no matter what’s going on. Let Him sustain you in the good times and the hard times. Don’t give up. Keep trusting Jesus no matter what.

Sermons from Good News: Jesus wants to help you

Church 7/22/2023

Offertory scripture:

Do what you can, especially in faith, God’s grace will cover you the rest of the way.

2 Corinthians 9:8

Sermon message:

Thesis: Jesus wants to help you.

Acts 10:38

You’ll know a persons heart by his or her fruit; look at Jesus, His fruit shows His heart for helping people.

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus wants to help you miss hell and make heaven. He is the only one who can do it.

John 3:16

We do have an enemy who is trying to drag people to hell.

John 10:10

But Jesus came so that we can have life and have it abundantly. He wants us to to miss hell and make heaven; He also wants us to live in abundance.

John 16:33

Tribulation: intense stress

Even when you have intense stress, stand strong and steadfast and courageous in the Word and in Jesus.

John 16:33: Jesus: “I have overcome the world, and I am still overcoming the world, today and every day.”

Because of this we can still have peace.

So how can we receive Jesus’s help?
A key: believing is important.

Point #1: When you need help, listen about Jesus.

Romans 10:17 faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

Consider the case of Zaccheus the diminutive tax collector. He heard about Jesus and when he learned that the Lord was passing through his town, he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him, invited Himself to Zaccheus’s house. Jesus changed Zaccheus’s life forever that day.

Consider the case of blind Bartimeus. He called Jesus’s name from a distance and asked for mercy. He risked appearing foolish, stupid, or crazy and he got Jesus’s attention. Jesus responded, and Bartimeus in faith asked for his sight to be restored. Jesus restored his sight and healed him.

Listening about Jesus is very important. It builds our faith.

Point #2: Believe that Jesus can help.

Blind Bartimeus believed that Jesus could help him.

A different man, a father, had a son who was demon possessed. He heard about Jesus and came to Him and asked for His help.

Mark 9:22-23

This father said: “If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Jesus says: “if you can believe, all things are possible.”

Sometimes it happens that a person might lose faith.

Oral Roberts early in his ministry was getting discouraged. God reached out to him and wanted to expand his ministry. Roberts spent time on his knees and spent a lot of time in the gospels. Then when he was ready, God released him to ministry.

Billy Graham was known for being a man of integrity. But even Graham had times of weakness in his faith. Here were his strategies: Focus on Jesus. Feed your faith. Follow your faith. These were the three steps. Don’t get into doctrines or side details. Focus on Jesus and keep it simple.

Point #3: Go to Jesus if you have an issue.

Matthew 11:28 come to Jesus.

Consider Mary. She had faith at the wedding feast at Cana and came to Jesus to ask for help.

Consider the lepers back in Jesus’s day. Leprosy was not just a physical issue but also an emotional issue due to being separated from everyone else. But ten lepers came to Jesus and asked for healing. He healed them.

If you’re struggling in your faith and you don’t know where to start in terms of looking into the Bible, start with the gospels. Start with Jesus. He wants to help you.

Point #4: Speak faith in Jesus.

Don’t swear while using Jesus’s name. Rather speak words and phrases that bless Jesus’s name and speak to your faith and belief in him.

Consider the woman who was bleeding for 12 years. She had tried everything else and drained her finances. When she heard Jesus was swinging through town, she sought him out, and reasoned that merely grabbing His cloak would be enough to heal her.

Mark 5:25-29

According to the Bible it is important what you say.

Point #5: Receive from Jesus.

Sermons from Good News: don't allow discouragement to stay

Church 7/15/2023

Offertory scripture:

Genesis 22: God calls Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, to test his faith. Abraham does, and at the last minute God stops Abraham, seeing his faith, and offers a ram for Abraham to sacrifice instead.

God may not call us to sacrifice our “only child” but He wants us to give to Him out of our hearts.

Sermon message:

Discouragement is on the rise yet again.

Thesis: don’t allow discouragement to stay

Discouragement is very destructive.

It can destroy any area of our lives.

Romans 10:17 faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

We are talking about supernatural and spiritual faith, not natural or human faith. This comes from the word of God. Get into the word of God and spend time listening to it. If you have discouragement, this is important.

You cannot stop birds from flying over your head, but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair.

You cannot stop discouragement from entering you life, but you can stop it from making a home in your life.

God is an encourager, not a discourager.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me.

All things are possible with God.

Satan is a discourager.

1 Peter 5:8. Be vigilant, be sober. Your enemy the devil is prowling around like a lion looking for someone to devour.

Next verse is critical. It’s an instruction.
1 Peter 5:9. Resist him, staying steadfast and firm in your faith.

Let’s build our spiritual faith.

Point #1: Remember Jesus is more powerful than the problem.

Acts 10:38 God appointed Jesus with the power of the Holy Ghost…..

Matthew 14:20-21. Jesus fed 5,000 men, plus women and children, and they were satisfied and had leftovers. This is the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.

Matthew 17:27 Jesus provides when there is a problem. He is more powerful than any situation or problem.

Jesus is more powerful than any power of discouragement.

Point #2: Remember there is power in the blood of Jesus.

Ephesians 1:7 we have redemption through the blood of Jesus Christ, and the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.

The blood of Jesus brings victory if we acknowledge it.

Revelation 12:11. The believers overcame Satan by the blood of Jesus Christ, and by having spoken it over their lives.

Remind others of the blood of Jesus which provides victory and power over any sin, mistake, or pattern. If Satan reminds you of your past, remind him of the blood of Jesus.

When you make a mistake, respond like Peter, not like Judas.

Point #3: remember, there is power in the name of Jesus.

We Christians need to use the name of Jesus over our situation.

Philippians 2:9-10. God highly exalted Jesus and gave Him a name which is above every other name. Every knee will bow at the name of Jesus.

Point #4: Remember, because of Jesus, God’s power is in you.

Romans 8:11 the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is in you, and by which will quicken your mortal bodies.

Acts 19:15 the demon refused to be cast out because the men who tried to cast it out didn’t have Jesus’s power. (They likely didn’t believe.)

Point #5: Remember to encourage yourself.

Encourage yourself in the Lord.

1 Samuel 30:6 David was discouraged and distressed; but he encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

There’s a point where you have to shift and encourage yourself in the Lord. We may need to rehearse the blessings and past victories given from God, as a means of encouraging ourselves.

Romans 8:37. We are more than conquerors through Him that loves us.
