Three-month Bible-reading check-in

If I'm honest, my discipline has faltered much in the last month. My reading has been sporadic. I've been busy, overwhelmed, and exhausted most of the time. Even in my commitment to posting sermon notes from church I have been slower to post, and have had to find alternate measures of reducing aspects of the workload, so that I won't completely drop off from posting my notes. These sermons are life-giving, because my pastor regularly has shown humility in his walk with God, and that he regularly yields to what God wants him to preach to us about. As such, I know that these sermons are God's messages for us, His congregation at this particular church, for this time. These messages are life.

Work has ramped up in terms of taking on new challenges. We've taken on a new client, which means extra learning, extra studying of different items and skills so that we can appropriately support this client with their needs at this point in time. I'm not yet at the point of working regular overtime (I think I just went half an hour over this past week), but I've been feeling fear and exhaustion as I choose to push through the work, because, after all, I'm still paid through the temp agency. I want to be able to show that I can stick, to the point of having steady work, and all that comes with it. But I also have something else:

6 Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” -- Joshua 1:6-9, NKJV

Although I'll admit that the day I first read this, I went off my reading plan to do so, I still felt like this was God speaking this to me. For my in-person Bible study for March (we met last week), I felt like God highlighted this as one of the passages for us to study. And then, the next time we had church, this was one of the focal passages from our pastor's sermon. So even in the face of fear and uncertainty, I know what the response must be: BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS. It feels good to have that kind of backup. For a long time, my feelings dictated what I did or how I responded. If something was scary, I didn't do it. Period. And I realize that a big part of it was that I didn't feel I had sufficient backup in case I took the risk and it didn't go well. Now, if something feels scary, but then I hear God saying "I want to bless you," followed by "be strong and courageous," sorry fear, you're not running the show this time.

I'm continuing to move out of my apartment in Evanston. I don't want to say too much, but this has been another example of walking in faith. I pray that I'm doing the right thing by doing this. Feedback I've received from older adults that I respect and value has consistent affirmed this. Even the Word of God affirms this as well, which my pastor pointed out once:

18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23 And Adam said:

“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

But deep down I've had my struggles, due to risks, costs, and uncertainty involved. That said: BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS. That, and I've been witnessing and experiencing encouragement regarding moving closer toward the point of proposing marriage to my love. What is yet in the way is a baseline that must be reached, one that my love and I have agreed on for quite a while now. Moving out means taking another step toward preparing for married life down the road, but because of the risks, costs, and uncertainty involved, it reminds me to continue praying and not to stop.

Blogging-wise, due to the aforementioned busy-ness, the overwhelm, and the exhaustion, I've not had as much opportunity to blog freely about what I'm reading in the Word, or anywhere else for that matter. But, I will mention that in the tiny amount of spare time that I do have, I have been working on a project that will arrive on this blog in a matter of a few months. I've resurrected the "Faraway State of Mind" series. At least two, if not three, posts will be added to the current cycle. I've gone back and forth and written drafts about how to explain my history with story-writing (and subsequent public revelation thereof) and I'm coming to the conclusion that it's pointless to try to explain it all. There's a lot more to this story series' inception than I will likely ever reveal, but suffice to say it served a purpose back in 2010 and 2011 in terms of trying to come to terms with existence banes that were stuck in my craw, and it will once again serve a similar purpose. Of course, the characters are fictional, but they also draw on real-life figures, and on occasion I will meld characters into one another, either for simplicity's sake, or because it will serve the overall story arc better. And of course, sometimes I will flat-out invent something about the character, because I don't want it to be too obvious who the story is talking about, should anyone I know come across it, particularly when the story is being used to process something negative that's still, well, stuck in my craw.

Meanwhile, my priorities continue to shift, and some things I've had to put aside will return to the plate, while other things I had been able to put on the plate due to the previous things I've put aside, will have to leave once more.

Life is picking up again. With God's help, I'm able to keep up. I will continue to do what I can about the daily Bible-reading, considering the passage from the book of Joshua mentions the importance of staying in and meditating on God's Word day and night. So that cannot go away. Even though my discipline regarding the reading program has come and gone, I do like to think that overall I am doing much better with at least reading something from the Bible than I ever have before.

Sermons from Good News: truth you can believe, part 2

Church 3/26/2022

God is a way maker, a promise keeper, and a light in the darkness.

Offertory scripture:

Sermon message:

Thesis: Truth you can believe, part 2

Review: there is a lot of knowledge in this world and it’s increasing rapidly. But there is a lot of misinformation (false knowledge) out there also.

God doesn’t lie. Therefore you will never get misinformation from God. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. And when He spoke to men writing the Bible He told them what to say. Therefore the Bible is completely true and stays the same. Worldly knowledge constantly changes, but God’s word doesn’t change.

God’s church is ultimate Truth. It never changes.

In Hebrews 11 God brags about people in the Old Testament that obeyed Him—these people had true insider information.

Point #1: Enoch’s truth is that when you walk with God it pays off

He was Adam’s great-great-great-great-grandson and 1,000 years before the flood. His son Methuselah was born and lived until the flood. Methuselah means “when he dies it will come.” Enoch knew something.

Point #2: Noah’s truth is when you keep doing what’s right it pays off

Noah was Enoch’s descendant. He knew about how Enoch was taken up into heaven. He kept doing what was right. He believed God. He feared God. He obeyed no matter what.

Point #3: Abraham’s truth is when you live by faith it pays off.

Abraham had supernatural hope from God that endured against all odds, that stood against natural hope that fails sometimes.

He became a first time dad at 100 years old, after being promised for 25 years by God that he would be a father.

Point #4: Sarah’s truth when you don’t give up on God’s promises it pays off

If you mess up, fess up; God can still bless you. She gave birth at 90 years.

Point #5: Joshua’s truth is when you keep obeying God it pays off.

He fought the battle of Jericho at 101 years old.

Out of the 25 times “be strong and courageous”, 4 of those times He says to Joshua.

And then God explains how to be strong and courageous.

Point #6: Shadrach, Mesach, and Abednego’s truth is when you stay committed to God it pays off

Because God said so.

Sermons from Good News: healing

Church 3/23/2022

Sermon message

Thesis: healing

Point #1: Where the Bible says sickness comes from

When God made the world there was no sickness. That only came when Adam and Eve sinned and that Satan brought sickness, through their sin, into the world.

Point #2: Where the Bible says healing comes from

Matthew 8:16,17 (NKJV, AMP, NIV)

Point #3: Healing can come through various delivery methods.

Consider Hezekiah:

Keep your eyes on God.

Point #4: Laying of hands

Point #5: The prayer of faith

Point #6: the name of Jesus

Point #7: Speaking to the sickness

Point #8: Prayer of agreement

Point #9: Believe and receive

Sermons from Good News: truths we can believe, part 1

Church 3/19/2022

Offertory scripture:

Needing the Lord is not a crutch; it is a good thing.

Putting God first, above all else.

Sermon message:

All things are possible for those who believe God and His Word.

But we have an enemy who tries to get us to not believe the Word of God. He is a liar and a deceiver. And unfortunately he is persistent. So we need to be persistent. Resist the devil and he will flee from us. Submit to God also.

Thesis: truths we can believe, part 1

Unfortunately misinformation can be considered true, and this has been the case for a very long time. Sometimes it gets very difficult to figured out what is true. Even interpretations of biblical scriptures. Today we are in an era of lots of knowledge. A lot of information out there. But there is also a lot of false knowledge and misinformation as well.

The pertinent questions today: what is the truth? What is the truth that we should be taking to heart?

Here are some solid truths that are true regardless of “new” information.

God never lies.

The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth.

The Bible is the Word of God and not the word of man.

Point #1: your sins can be forgiven

Satan tells you you won’t be forgiven and he condemns you. Condemnation is not from God. But the Holy Spirit convicts you and says just get it right. Satan says you can’t get back up; God says you can get up and try again. Condemnation is misinformation.

Point #2: You can be saved.

Hell doesn’t have to be your destiny.

Receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and you are saved.

Misinformation says you cannot be saved; true information says you can.

Point #3: You can pray.

Misinformation says God doesn’t care about you or have time for you if you try to talk to Him.

But the truth says this:

If prayer wasn’t important, Jesus wouldn’t have answered the disciples’ question. But Jesus answered and said prayer is important. Therefore prayer is important and good. And you can pray.

You can pray and ask for good things.

Point #4: You can receive rest and peace.

Satan says you will always have problems. But the Bible says you can have peace and rest.

Point #5: you can have all your needs met

Misinformation says God doesn’t care about your needs or can’t get it to you; but the Bible says that He can and that He cares.

God has the means; He has the desire; He has the availability to give you what you need. God is the One who has true “insider knowledge” of all things.

Point #6: What you say is powerful.

The Bible says this too. And what the Bible says is powerful.

Mark 11:23 includes the word “say" or variations thereof, 4 times.

Keep speaking the word of God, over and over and over and over. Use your words to fight the battle against fear, doubt, against Satan and all lies. Stand in God’s truth and speak His Word. Pray. Believe. Fight back. Speaking words of faith as in the Bible will give you the victory. Repeating the truth as in the word of God will give you the victory in any battle.

Sermons from Good News: faith

Church 3/16/2022

Sermon message:

Thesis: faith

It is believing, speaking, and acting on the Word of God.

Point #1: God wants us to live by faith

This will be the third time I am coming to you. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”

“Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.”

Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Point #2: God makes faith available

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Point #3: You can grow in faith

Abraham is considered the father of faith

He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,

Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God.

But he did not doubt or waver in unbelief concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and empowered by faith, giving glory to God,

Parable of the talents

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’ “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

It is our job to multiply our talents.

Point #4: Faith is believing, speaking, and acting on God’s word

Faith brings about good works.

But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

God created us for good works.

A stone from memory lane: a promise God made

Ten years ago, March 20, 2012, I had this dialogue with God while at work:

(for context, God's words are in red, mine in response are in blue, and the words in black are my reflections after-the-fact)

I wrote more stuff today. Had a fear so paralyzing late this morning that I texted a bunch of brothers for help. After several encouraging texts and an encouraging phone conversation, I found peace. And in the midst of this peace I felt I heard God speaking to me. I will share some of what he said:

Have patience: if she really does care for you, she'll wait for you. If she does choose another man, it either means she wouldn't have been good for you in the first place (i.e. her heart is not in the right place -- see [name edited out]), or she was meant for him (see [name edited out]).

If she is right for you, you'll know it because she will willingly wait for you, no matter how long it takes. She'll be there when you're ready.

I know [what your heart desires]. But I want to give you [what]'s best for you. Sometimes that means ya gotta wait. I don't want to just give you "just anybody."

I then wrote a question I had for God:

question I have is this: if I don't know her yet, how do I know that she is really waiting for me?

He then continued, seemingly ignoring my question, but not ignoring what I probably really was asking:

Remember how patient you were with [name edited out]? That's the type of person [referring to the patience I had] I want you to have.

...it's an "active waiting"

that's how I want you to wait on Me.

I spent the entire commute home (I took the train today) re-reading through these words and meditating on them. As I was reading, it hit me that I don't think I could have been able to let them sink in if he had tried to tell me any earlier. I've always had a thing of ignoring words of wisdom if they weren't quite exactly what I wanted to hear. These words were words I've been waiting to hear for a long time, and I was finally ready to hear God directly address this.

It was one of the first times in my life that I had ever written down such a dialogue between Him and me. Of course, we know that He comes through. And, boy, has He ever. My love and I are not married yet, and we aren't quiiiiite in a position to officially prepare for it as of now, but the last couple weekends at church featured two conversations between my love and me, and someone on staff at our church checking up on us and encouraging us.

Still actively waiting. Ten years later, though... it's a lot closer now! Praise God!

Sermons from Good News: what can we do

Church 3/12/2022

Offertory scripture:

God is good all the time.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Sermon message:

Thesis: what can we do

And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

So, what can we do?

Point #1: we can pray 🙏

Praying = interceding

you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

Point #2: We can keep our eyes on God

I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Point #3: We can cheer ourselves up

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

“Cheer yourselves up; I have overcome the world.”

Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

Point #4: We can help someone

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, And He will pay back what he has given.

A quick, brief spontaneous post about Ukraine and Russia

Ukraine and Russia have been at war for a little over two weeks now. Even though I don't follow the news much (save for sports), reading about this war has become unavoidable. While I want to be mindful how I post about this, I do feel a sense of obligation to at least write something, to not pretend like I don't know it's going on. From where does this sense come? As I've been working to grow in my faith, and taking on more responsibility as an adult, a man, and a Christian, avoidance is not an option, at least when it comes to big events.

In truth, I don't know what to think about this war. Now, before the casual observer who might be reading this becomes quick to "help" and "educate" me, please note a few things: 1.) I'm not asking for advice. There are times when I do want advice or education. When those times come, I will ask for it. This is not one of those times. 2.) I am and have been praying for everyone involved. Jesus cares for the oppressed, but He also cares for the sinner. He comforts those in need -- the widows, the orphans, those in need financially (or otherwise). Both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible indicate multiple times where God says what to do and how to take care of others. But, He also cares for the sinner. God reached out to Cain both before and after he had murdered Abel. God still blessed Moses in other ways, even after Moses had forfeited his privilege to enter the land of Canaan. God still favored King David, even after he murdered Bathsheba's first husband and covered it up. And so on. Yes, He will not wait forever for a person to come to repentance if they refuse, but He also doesn't have a quick trigger.

Ukraine right now is hurting, but around the world, it is also being painted a little too black-and-white regarding the war with Russia. I'm not going to pretend to know what Vladimir Putin is thinking. He has his reasons, rightly or wrongly, and I suspect that we don't know the whole picture with him, or even with his counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. It appears at present that Zelenskiy is beloved and Putin is reviled. Not sure why. Maybe there are excellent reasons for both. But, given my distrust of the media at large for all of its coverage over the last two years, I find it difficult to trust the popular opinions given of both leaders -- and both countries -- at this time.

As such, I don't know what to think of this war. But, I will share a few things that I do think:

  1. I do think the bombing of the children's hospital in Mariupol is terrible. I think that taking out military bases/sites/strategic locations should be the goal, and not hospitals.
  2. I am concerned about Russia's seizure of the Chernobyl nuclear plant. Not so much that I think Russia will turn into a madman and do something to that power plant (like blow it up??) that will cause havoc in the surrounding areas and have far-reaching effects; I don't necessarily think Russia is "evil" in that way. But, because Russia (and Putin) are full of humans -- i.e. sinners -- just like the rest of us, I do worry about, if the EU (and/or NATO) get more directly involved, how Russian control of that power plant could play a role in affecting the whole world. But as concerning as that is, something else concerns me far more:
  3. The potential use of nuclear weapons. According to this article here, Russia has more than any other nation, and Russia and the US together reportedly have 93% of the total world's arsenal. Even though my worldview and politics have shifted over the years, my concern about nuclear weapons has not. I've had dreams over the years about nuclear weapons, and I've had dreams about getting up and fleeing all of a sudden, if needed.
  4. While the bombings and killings of Ukrainian citizens is horrible, contrary to the popular opinion, I do not see NATO as "good" and Russia as "evil." A key part of it is simply that NATO and the EU both represent to me a serious attempt and motion toward "one world power," which, according to the Bible, God is against. He destroyed the Tower of Babel and confused everyone's languages once. In the future, Jesus will return again to both bring His followers back to heaven, an event that will also mean the destruction of the rest of the world. Bottom line, as far as I'm concerned, both NATO and Russia are sinners who fall far short of God's glory, just like the rest of us, and whom will be judged by the God of the Bible at the right time for their actions.
  5. All that said, I pray for both Ukraine and Russia. My prayers for Ukraine are obvious: for God to protect its people. My prayers for Russia may not be quite so obvious. For one thing, Russia has cracked down on its own citizens and businesses. Among other things, it has arrested anti-war protesters on the spot. But I doubt that that's getting reported in the same way that the carnage in Ukraine is.
  6. I also pray for all surrounding areas, Belarus, Poland, Romania... and I pray for here in the United States as well. Right now the war is "far away," but I cannot take for granted the possibility that that all could change. The truth is, this war could be over tomorrow. Or it could be another 4-5 years, with us in it. I don't know. There has been talk about the potential for World War III, and I believe it. But there is also talk, talk that is not out there unfortunately, about a God who is still on His throne and still in charge of this world, and who will intervene. It is not for me to say how; I don't know how. If I've learned anything the last two years, it's to learn to trust Him in even more ways that I had previously thought possible.

Today also marks two years to the day that COVID became real to me. Well, almost. Tomorrow marks the day. But yesterday, two years ago, nursing homes (where I had been playing piano as a contracted entertainer) began shutting down to outsiders. Today two years ago ended up being the last day I would ever set foot in person in any nursing home with the job I had at the time, and tomorrow -- tomorrow was that day. All professional sports shut down. Work became exclusively virtual for the first time ever. And no one knew how long this was going to go. Days stretched into weeks, stretching into months, stretching now to two years. Life became a constant adjustment, even as I began working at a nursing home (ironic, given my comments earlier this paragraph) in April. It is through this constant expectancy of change that has informed my perspective on this current war in eastern Europe. It could end tomorrow. Or in 5 years. But I expect that what will remain constant is change.

This post ended up not being as quick or brief as I planned. It was time to at least say something, though. I'm praying. Are you?

Sermons from Good News: the Holy Spirit

Church 3/9/2022

Sermon message:

Thesis: the Holy Spirit

When you are born again (ie you receive Jesus Christ inside of you) you also receive the Holy Spirit

Inside the Tabernacle, the Holy of Holies was an extra sacred place; only the chief priest could enter, and only once a year.

and the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.

But Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross changed everything:

And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

The veil was ripped from the top down to the bottom, meaning God ripped it. It no longer separates us from God.

Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,

And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

Point#1: the Holy Spirit is the Helper

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

“But when the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, He will testify and bear witness about Me.

Point #2: The Spirit of Truth

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

We do need to respect the Holy Spirit and not grieve Him.

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,

And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
