I'm thankful for the occasional gumption to finish (or at least get within striking distance of finishing) pieces I started quite a while ago. Last fall I wrote and posted a text ["http://n8daoggblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/progress-in-motion.html"] in the wake of my favorite baseball team's latest failure to win the World Series, but for some reason I felt like I needed to rewrite it a bit. Hence the version I'm about to show here. Needless to say, I'm still looking to use both versions of these lyrics in separate songs.
"Institution of Heartbreak" lyrics (2nd attempt--written quite a while ago)
You know what it's like / when something you hope in / falls over and over again /
Sometimes / you die a million times / before it's over /
The sun rises in the east / and it sets in the west / on the institution of heartbreak / and undying loyalty /
You forget what it's like / when the new year / starts over and over again /
Sometimes / it's over / before it's over /
The sun rises in the east / and it sets in the west / on the institution of heartbreak / and undying loyalty /
It's maddening as hell / how close they get sometimes / and utterly unbelievable /
When it counts the most / they fail spectacularly /
But at some point / you remember / why you care / despite a century of pain / despite being scorned /
It's a lesson in humility
The sun rises in the east / and it sets in the west / on the institution of heartbreak / and undying loyalty
