Note before sharing the sermon: This was a really good and powerful message. I’ve heard a decent number of sermons on communion over the years (primarily at my current church, although I may have heard one or two at my previous church as well), but I felt as if this one really drove home the full point of its intent and purpose, and for that I am grateful.
Here are the bullet points ahead of sharing the full notes:
1. Communion reminds us of the cross.
2. Communion reminds us of the grave.
3. Communion reminds us of the ascension.
4. Communion reminds us of the Great Commission. (Note: my pastor simply referred to it as “the commission” without the word “great” included. I included it here and below because there is no mistaking what the “Great Commission” refers to, while the word “commission” by itself, for non-believers, might not be as clear.)

Sermon message:
Today is communion Sunday (we do this once a month)
Thesis: The communion blessing.
Romans 10:17
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
God wants you blessed.
God asked Aaron the priest to speak blessings over the His people, not curses.
Numbers 6:24-26
“The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.” ’
2 Corinthians 13:14
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:31-32
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
Don’t fall for the lie that God is the bad guy. He is the good guy and wants you blessed.
But sometimes people will preach something that’s not in the Bible. To check against this, check the Bible.
[In the mouth of two or three witnesses let a thing be established. ]
Philippians 4:19
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:37
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
For communion, let a man examine himself. If there is an error in you, just confess it. You’ll be forgiven if you truly confess. God wants you blessed. Communion is a time of blessing. It’s important to receive it the right way.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
Point #1: Communion reminds us of the cross.
Say what Jesus said at the cross: “it is finished” whenever the devil tries to accuse you of your sin and guilt continuing and not being forgiven. Say: “it is finished.”
John 19:30
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Point #2: Communion reminds us of the grave.
Meaning, Jesus is risen.
Matthew 28:6
He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Point #3: Communion reminds us of the ascension.
Mark 16:19
So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
John 14:2
In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Point #4: Communion reminds us of the Great Commission.
Mark 16:15-18
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Romans 10:17
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
