Offertory scripture:
So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.
Romans 8:6 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Romans%208:6&version=NLT
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Romans 8:6 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Romans%208:6&version=NKJV
Sermon message:
God is good and He always will be because He is God.
Thesis: what to do in scary times.
Point #1: Feed your faith and starve your doubts to death.
What you feed grows.
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Romans%2010:17&version=NKJV
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith.
1 John 5:4 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=1%20John%205:4&version=NKJV
Even Jesus needed faith to overcome the obstacles He had to face in His ministry.
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=John%2016:33&version=NKJV
Even Jesus needed to know the word of God.
We are to act like Jesus.
God has given you and I “faith food.”
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Philippians%204:13&version=NKJV
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Philippians%204:19&version=NKJV
Point #2: Look to God and His word, and not to at the world and its problems.
Looking to God’s word feeds our faith; looking to the world and its problems feeds our fears and doubts.
And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Matthew 14:28-31 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Matthew%2014:28-31&version=NKJV
Point #3: Speak the Word to your challenges, and tell them to leave
Challenges have a voice, and they will speak to you. Satan has a voice, and he will speak to you. Therefore, speak to them. Speak the Word to them. Tell them to leave.
Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Matthew 8:23-26 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Matthew%208:23-26&version=NKJV
Jesus spoke directly to His challenges. If He did it, we can (and must) as well.
For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.
Mark 11:23 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Mark%2011:23&version=NKJV
Stop letting your challenges talk to you. Talk back to them.
Point #4: Humbly pray and believe God has answered your prayers.
Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:4 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Matthew%2018:4&version=NKJV
Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
Mark 11:24 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=Mark%2011:24&version=NKJV
Point #5: draw close to God and enjoy His protection and provision
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James 4:8 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage?search=James%204:8&version=NKJV
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “ He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot. “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”
